
Romania’s industrial future in automobiles will depend on the country growing from its status as a manufacturer of basic vehicle parts for export to producing the full portfolio of components for the final assembly of vehicles.
In the 1990s Romania was an industrial country without a perspective on how to develop its closed manufacturing base in an open market.
Towards the end of that decade and beginning in the 2000s, the west, centre and southwest of the country grew as a location for the production of car parts, as western European companies outsourced the manufacture of basic components from their home countries.
At the same time new automobile industries grew around Renault’s purchase of the privatised Dacia car plant in Mioveni, Arges county.
