Bucharest Tourism Plan: Lake enhancements

The Bucharest district 1 and 2 city halls plan a series of harbors on several connected Bucharest lakes, allowing visitors to cross Bucharest by boat, according to Romanian media.  Herastrau, Floreasca and Tei lake will have six harbors and boats for public use, according to a project by the Lake and Parks administration in Bucharest, quoted by newspaper Gandul.

A cable car will also be included in this project and will connect Fundeni area to Herastrau park. Both projects will be run by the municipalities which will invest EUR 20 million, most of which EU funds and municipality funds. The projects, expected to be done in two years, should place Romania on the map for city break destinations, according to representatives of the two city halls.

In September this year, the district 1 city hall has announced the plans to build a cable car (‘telegondola’) crossing the northern Bucharest lakes and was preparing the bid to choose the company which will offer consultancy for the zonal urban planning needed for the project. The consultancy fee will reach EUR 150,000. The cable car will connect Herastrau park to Pantelimon area of Bucharest, but the final track will be decided during the design phase.

The cable car will be both a tourism attraction and a means of public transport. The initiators of the project expect it to carry 3,000 people each hour, which is the equivalent of 30 buses. The city hall expects it to alleviate the car traffic in Bucharest.

Similar cable car systems, built for tourism purposes, have been implemented in Mamaia seaside resort and in several mountain resorts.
