Bechtel, winner of one of Romania's most controversial infrastructure projects, the Transylvania Highway, is also interested in building the third and fourth reactors of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant. The investment project has also caught the eye of Canadian company Lavalin and Russian company Atomtechnoprom. The two new reactors that the Romanian state wants to build on the Cernavoda platform represent the biggest local investment project of the past 20 years. In order to complete this project, EnergoNuclear had called last year for bids for the engineering, acquisitions and construction contract, which is worth EUR 3.2 billion. The project for building the two new reactors is facing problems, following the withdrawal of one of the major investors, Czech company CEZ, and the fact the German company RWE could also pull out soon. RWE's withdrawal would bring the original group of investors down to five: Nuclearelectrica, Enel, GDF Suez, Iberdrola and ArcelorMittal. The Romanian state controls 60.15% of the project at this point, via Nuclearelectrica, while RWE, Enel and GDF Suez own 9.15% each. Iberdrola and ArcelorMittal hold 6.2% each of EnergoNuclear.
